We’re chugging into October and I have yet to read a spooky book. They’re in the line, I promise! It’s just hard to coordinate library loans, lolsob. I am getting slowly swamped by them. Send help.

#64) RISE TO THE SUN by Leah Johnson

Two girls, each dealing with their own baggage, meet by chance during a music festival, and end up in a whirlwind romance? Hell yes.

I’m pretty much always down for “conventional rom-com tropes but gay” and this definitely delivers on that. It’s cute, the romance that develops between the two main characters is really sweet, and I also liked how the author dealt with heavier subjects such as the death of a family member, sexual blackmail, and panic attacks.

I will admit I did find some of the aspects of the story and the characters’ actions a little frustrating, but I think this is more of an issue with the genre itself than with this book specifically. Is something really a rom-com if it doesn’t involve some kind of big misunderstanding? Apparently not.
